Summary:
Musical porcelain Jewellery collection produced at the new EKWC [European Ceramic Work Centre] CAD/CAM facility, August - September 2010. The project continued into 2011 and 2012 to grow to include a full length record, a concert at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York in september 2011 and a number of music videos. Audiowear also toured the world and has been on view at exhibitions in Korea, Great Brittain and New York.

Christie Wright experimented with early CNC milling equipment at the EKWC (European Ceramic Work Center) in 2004 and 2008. When the opportunity came to to test the EKWC's new CAD/CAM facility, she and her partner Arjen Noordeman were inspired to create Audiowear specifically for the combination of this 3D modeling equipment with ceramic reproduction techniques.

"Audiowear" is a series of musical jewelry inspired by idiophone and aerophone instruments and the acoustic quality of clay. The collection includes a Trumpet bracelet, a Guiro cuff, a Whistle charm necklace, a Pan-flute collar, a Rattle bracelet and Xylophone bangles. Designed in Rhino software, the models were first 3D printed on the ZPrinter 450. Moulds were designed by splitting the models into parts and printing contra-moulds for some more complex objects. After creating the plaster moulds, all the instruments were slip-cast in white and pigmented porcelain. Arjen then recorded numerous basic musical patterns with the pieces to build an audiobank of samples for musicians to create compositions with.

For the opening event of the CAD/CAM facilities at the EKWC, Elasticbrand created a process video including music composed by Skooby Laposky from sounds produced by the AudioWear jewelry. Other musical collaborations include Michael Hearst of the Brooklyn band One Ring Zero who was given the entire AudioWear collection, with which he produced a composition by playing the instruments himself. And Hip Hop producer Dirt E. Dutch (Connecticut) has created an instrumental track made of the AudioWear sound samples for which New York artists Breez Evahflowin' and Caits Meissner wrote and performed vocals. Elasticbrand went on to produce a full length record in collaboration with over 20 artists, created music videos and designed packaging for a limited edition vinyl record that was presented with a live concert at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York City (September 22, 2011) to celebrate the launch of the Audiowear project.

Audiowear has been exhibited at the Ceramix Biennial in Seoul, Korea, The Ceramics Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent Great Brittain, Cranbrook Art Museum and Material Connexxion in the United States and will be shown in 2012 at the Museum of Arts & Design (US) who acquired the Audiowear in its entirety for their permanent collection.
